Quad City Manufacturing Lab
Quad City Manufacturing Laboratory (QCML) is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization headquartered at Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, IL. QCML is operated and staffed through Western Illinois University (WIU). QCML performs research, development, and technology transfer with commercial, government, and academic institutions, focused in the areas of advanced materials, manufacturing, and robotic technologies. Examples of manufacturing processes at QCML include 3D metal printing (Laser Additive Manufacturing), Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS), Friction Stir Welding (FSW), Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP), and collaborative robotics.
QCML's mission is to: • Function as a national resource for research and development (R38D) of advanced materials and manufacturing technology for commercial and military applications. • Demonstrate and transition cutting-edge manufacturing technologies to partner organizations. • Facilitate collaboration among manufacturing, research and educational institutions • Partner with the Rock Island Arsenal (RIA) Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (JMTC) and the manufacturing industry to develop and implement technological innovations • Promote and sustain job growth
Western Illinois University School of Engineering
WIU's School of Engineering is one of the newest ABET accredited engineering programs in the State of Illinois. We offer a multidisciplinary degree that allows students to build specialization on top of a fundamental core of subjects from Math, Science, Mechanics, Materials, Electronics, Robotics-Automation, Thermo-Fluids, Structures, Engineering Management, and Design.
In January 2017 we added a Mechanical Engineering degree and plan to add Civil and Electrical Engineering in the future although our general degree does a pretty good job with Civil and Electrical.
We also have a nearly full service machine shop, a maker space, and several 3D plastic printers. Our students do our design work and have helped companies and individuals in the Quad Cities region develop new ideas and prototypes. Our seniors routinely work on important projects for and in companies as part of their Senior Capstone Design projects.
If you want to learn more and explore the possibilities of working with and developing new engineers, by all means, come talk to us.
